A visit with Cern – The King of NY

After winning Art Battles flat out in NYC and part of the winning team at Secret Walls Cooper Sq. it’s safe to say Cern is the King of the New York City street scene. We had a chance to visit his studio and sit down with the brilliant mind that is Cernesto.

Unfortunately, Cern’s building that houses his studio and many other artists on North 10th st. in Williamsburg is closing and he has to move all of his stuff out. This created a unique time to visit his studio. Cern’s work often times incorporates cats and elephants. I asked him to show me one of his favorite elephant pieces.

Most people have become familiar with Cern’s street works but it is rare to see his water colors. I got a glimpse of this immaculate aesthetic featuring two women and their animals flourishing in the garden (pictured below). The faces of the women are so detailed and the animals are heart warming.

The most interesting part of my visit with Cern is his vast collection of abstract works. I am so familiar with the figurative images that he creates on the street that I was surprised to learn that he paints as much abstract as he does anything else. While spending time with this creative mind, I came to realize how much is going on in this man’s head and how his work is just a creative outlet.
