#10 The Year of the Dragon – East Village Walls – BK FOXX
The new year started off right with Chineese New Year festivities. If you have never had a chance to see the parade, fireworks, and craziness that is China Town during the New Year Festival it’s an experience all on its own. East Village Walls has been curating downtown for quite a few years now and this year’s work was tremendous. New Works by CPWON and BKFOXX and TOP TOP Top legacy murals by Mad STEEZ and Dragon76 make this project definitely worth a look. Also check out walls by Calicho, Dan Kitchener, Manuel Alejandro and many more. Chinatown is no slouch when it comes to street art. (Corner of Hester and Eldridge)
#9 Morgan Walls – 2DX Crew – Min, Ski, and more
This one is for the graffiti heads. Morgan Walls has been taken over by 2DX crew and has curated some of the best legal walls in the city. They now boast over 15 burners, pieces, and straight up graffiti mastery. Stacked in-between Bushwick Collective and Graff Tours, this is fast becoming one of the best low key spots for graff in the city.
#8 125th St. Grandscale Mural Project – Uptown Grand Central – Lexi Bella
This year, The Grandscale project got a revamp with many new artists, and a few artists touching up old pieces. It’s great for Harlem to have such an amazing street art project fusing together local artists and many amazing creatives from the outer boroughs as well. Lexi Bella’s Winter Solstice Queen stands out as her work continues to evolve and get so much better every year.
#7 The Graff Tours Mural Project – Just, Phetus, Atomiko, Isabel Ewing
Our organization has been super busy this year. If you had not had a chance to check out one of our tours or workshops please do so. When we are not doing classes we have helped curate multiple walls this year. Stop by Meserole and Waterbury st. for some amazing street art and graffiti from the likes of JUST WF, Isabel Ewing, Atomiko, and Phetus 88.
#6 First Street Green Park
Long been one of the best kept secret street art spots in Manhattan, First street Green is constantly getting fresh works making it one the best open air galleries in the city. Curated by @BKLYNevile, This year’s Patty Astor celebration of life stole the show with 15 artists (maybe more) doing their best tributes. Patty was an historic figure in the beginning of the street art and graffiti movement so it was only fitting she got a proper send off.
#5 Freeman’s Alley
Beginning as a true underground street art location, Freeman’s has slowly transformed into a semi curated street art zone with both locals and international artists frequenting when needing to get up in NYC. These days ZUI NYC has been bringing some much needed organizing to the alley way that is much of an ode to OLD NYC as it is the Melbourne Laneways. This year we had new works by Cope, Klonism, Mad Villian, Enzo and More.
#4 Shepard Fairey’s Beastie Boys Mural
Celebrating Hip Hop’s 50th Birthday has been one of the best cultural moments of my life. Seeing events, murals, and interviews spanning generations of artists has made NYC lit these past few years. One of the cultural pioneers, the Beastie Boys got a lot of love with getting their own street named after them in the East Village and a mural by the legendary Shepard Fairey. LISA Project continues to impress with giant curations and “Posse in Effect” by Shepard Fairey is no different. Check out an instant classic by OBEY in the East Village.
#3 Bushwick Collective – Maxi Bagnasco, Corey Pane, Raize, and many more
Bushwick Collective continues its historic run as the best street art festival in NYC. The collective boasts almost 50 murals to its name with artists clamoring to get a spot. This year was no different with Masterpieces by countless artists. For 13 years, the Collective has changed Bushwick into the graffiti and street art haven of NYC. Congrats on another amazing year.
#2 – Bedstuy Walls – Will Power, Craig Anthony Miller, Lena Cruz and more
This 3 year old festival is fast becoming a must see in NYC. Art Face and Mui have done an amazing job of bringing in the local community and beautifying space. They have been able to assemble an amazing cast of muralist that gets better every year. This year’s group headed by Will Power, Craig Anthony Miller, and Iena Cruz was no joke. This upstart has made a great impact in their short existence and it’s exciting to see what they can do next.
#1 Street Art Mankind – dragon76, Mr. super A, Milo, and More
With incredible murals at the Javits Center and outside the Midtown tunnel, Street Art Mankind has created the largest most incredible murals NYC has to offer. If you just want to see the biggest baddest murals check them out in Hudson yards. Yes of course, it’s no surprise the developers of Hudson yards used Street Art to buy attention to their newly created colonization. But if you want to ignore the plight of all the people who were suppose to get the tax rebate the developers used, and just look at amazing murals. Look no further.
