Inside the Studio Part 1: Damien Mitchell presents “Tools of the Trade”

After living here for over a year and getting up like a mad man at Centrifuge, Bushwick Collective, Waatah, and most recently in Williamsburg, Damien Mitchell has put together his first major solo show. Tools of the Trade will be a stenciled look at classic graffiti materials. Appropriating classic graffiti caps, cans, and canvas, Damien has been able to utilize his skills. Damien uses seven layers of stencil to produce the beautiful texture of each image.

This show will be an extension of Damien’s street work. Earlier this year, he created works of a crushed spray can with the help of his friend Bode Klein at Dodworth street in Brooklyn. This was the first street work here in Brooklyn of Damien’s experimenting with classical graffiti imagery. Klein, originally from Denver, had a great time with us as he collaborated with Damien adding his hammerhead sharks. This work is one of many for the Dodworth st. art project sponsored by the Dodworth senior center in Brooklyn.

Damien has prepared canvases of some of the classic aerosol brands including old Krylon and has made smaller works of different graffiti tips. For the show, twelve different graffiti caps ranging from a NY Fat to a Ghetto Blaster will be on display. Damien has also included tools like Krinks, Ink mops, and sharpies. Damien has chosen an array of brands and tools encapsulating different eras of graffiti history from past to present.

Most recently Damien painted the Levee in Williamsburg. This comedic imagery has been a hit even making it to the Sydney Morning Herlad back in Damien’s home country. This piece shows the evolution of Damien’s work from his portraiture when he first got to the US to now incorporating humor, graffiti culture and characters to form a modern day graffiti style.
